THE TRIP- More of Portland, Maine

The old saying goes, "Horses sweat, men perspire, ladies glow."

Yeah. So here I am, glowing in the 102 degree heat.
The seats on the trolley were plastic. Glow, baby, glow...

Was the heat getting to her?
On the waterfront.

Some of the murals painted on downtown wharf buildings.

Globe sculpture.

More downtown sights.

The observatory.
We saw cemeteries.
The large backpack-shaped tombstone marks the grave of Alonso Stinson-
first man from Maine killed in the Civil War.

We saw churches.

This marker is one of many on Portland's Freedom Trail.   This "trail" is a series of locations that were significant to the Underground Railroad and the cause of freedom.  Those sites include churches, used clothing shops, hack stands, and especially barber shops where information was exchanged to help slaves stay safe and free.
You can walk the Freedom Trail and see all 16 markers, but you might want to choose a day that is not 102 degrees.
(We were told that the normal temps in July were closer to 82 degrees. I guess our motto is, "Why be normal?")
House of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Statue of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

More downtown sights.

I just liked the look of this building.
Would have been fun to go in, but we didn't have time.

Statue titled, "The Maine Lobsterman"
I would like to go back to Portland, Maine some day.  I think I could spend a week there, just checking out the history and enjoying the waterfront.
I will try to choose a time when it is not 102 degrees, though.  I've glowed enough.
